Plumbing Installation & Repair

When installing a Fiberglass Bath and Shower Unit there is a couple of tips a homeowner can do to help ensure a quieter and better looking finished bathroom. Use insulation as a noise filter to deaden the sound of falling water. First, insulation on the floor where the Bath and Shower unit will be installed. This is particularly important for upstairs bathrooms. Second, insulation between the wall studs where the Bath and Shower unit will rest up against. Future having sound asleep occupants of neighboring bedrooms will thank you.

Normally the Bath and Shower Unit is secured with Nails or Screws near the edge of the unit. The thickness of the Unit is approximately 1/8 inch thick. By using narrow strips of Asphalt shingles you can help smooth the transition from the edge of the Unit to the surrounding Stud edge surface, thus creating a more finished wall appearance when the Sheetrock is applied.

Water Heater & Circulator

It's important to keep your water heater in good working condition. Either that or you face time without the appliance that doesn't get all that praise it deserves.

Measure the center-to-center dimension between the hot and cold water pipes on the top of the water heater and try to ensure the new heater has the same dimensions. That will make the plumbing job a bit easier. Take a look at the plumbing connecting to the old water heater. Make sure you have a gas union in the gas line if you have a gas water heater, and make sure there are a water shutoff for the cold water inlet pipe and a union connector for the hot water outlet pipe. Heater, then install the cold water shut off valve, and / or gas union or hot water pipe union. Our plumbers do the right job in the beginning so hopefully everything is in place.

Hot water circulating systems are hot water systems that circulate hot water through the hot water piping so that obtaining hot water is nearly instantaneous. They are often referred to as re-circ, re-circ or re-circulating pumps. Hot water recirculation systems deliver hot water to fixtures quickly without waiting for the water to get hot.

Rather than relying on low water pressure common in most water lines, re-circulating systems use a pump to rapidly move water from a water heater to the fixtures. Hot water recirculation systems can be activated by the push of a button, or by a thermostat, timer or motion sensor. Systems that use a thermostat or timer automatically turn on the pump whenever water temperature drops below a set-point, or when the timer reaches a setting. These systems ensure that hot water is always available at the faucet without any waiting. Systems that use a thermostat or timer may use more energy than on/off button or switch operated systems.

Toilet

Installing a toilet is not too difficult, although there are a fair number of steps. If everything goes smoothly, you should be able to replace a toilet in about one to two hours. Turn off the water at the valve behind the toilet.

Incidentally, if you need to replace this valve for some reason, doing so when the toilet is out will make your work that much easier. It is also a great opportunity to repaint the wall behind the toilet. Next, flush the toilet. Hold down the handle to drain as much water out as possible. Now you can disconnect the hose from the tank. You may be able to do this by hand. Otherwise, use a pair of slip-joint pliers to loosen the nut. Have a small container ready to catch the water from the hose and fill valve. Because of the weight and size of two-piece toilets, it is advisable to remove the tank from the bowl.

Faucet & Fixture

To fix a single handle leaky faucet, first turn off water to the faucet by shutting off the water supply valves underneath the sink. Next, push the handle of the faucet to the ON position to make sure water is indeed turned off to the faucet.

Remove the cap cover from the top of the faucet handle that is causing the leak. The small common screwdriver may come in handy here to remove the cap. Next, using a Philips screwdriver remove the screw that holds the handle to the faucet valve stem.

Once the screw has been removed, use a wrench to unscrew the nut that secures the faucet valve stem to the faucet. Now remove the handle assembly from the leaky faucet. There is usually a small screw located on the backside of the faucet handle. Sometimes it may be covered by a small plastic decorative piece.
